PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Firefighters are known to rescue kittens from tall trees but Saturday afternoon they proved they can also rescue dogs from wet river banks.

Portland Fire and Rescue was called after a passing boater noticed a dog trapped on a ledge along the west bank of the Willamette in the downtown area. Officials say a truck company responded but because of the steep and dangerous terrain, they decided a rescue boat would be a better option.

The dog became excited and began to bark once the boat approached and after several minutes of coaxing, firefighter Gary Grey was able to pull him aboard.

Officials say the dog was wet and cold but otherwise in good spirits. The animal has been turned over to animal control.
