PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Heavy rains wreaked havoc on Portland and metro area streets on Monday morning, complicating the commute for many drivers and even damaging cars and roads.
The rains also caused the city’s sewer system to overflow into the Willamette River. Officials say people should avoid contact with the river for at least 48 hours due to bacteria in the water.
Some schools and businesses are delayed or dismissing early. Get the latest on the KOIN.com Closings page. In fact, the Oregon Zoo has decided to stay closed for the day. Additionally, there will be no Zoo Lights on Monday night.
TriMet buses and MAX trains were experiencing delays as well.

Gresham was experiencing flooding as well.
The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for most of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington for Monday night through Wednesday afternoon.
The watch includes the greater Portland metro area, north and central Oregon coast, the central Willamette Valley, the central Columbia River Gorge, the north and central Coast Range, and the northern Oregon Cascades and Cascade foothills.
