SHERWOOD, Ore. (KOIN) — Friends and family of a Seaside policeman killed on the job gathered at his former high school Monday evening to pay their final respects.
Sergeant Jason Goodding, 39, was serving a warrant Friday night when he was shot multiple times. He and the suspect later died at local hospitals.

News of his death came as a shock to the community. A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night in his honor.
“It’s a tough time for everyone in the community,” Goodding’s friend Brian Taylor said.
During Monday’s vigil at Sherwood High School, hundreds gathered on the same football field Goodding walked along with his future wife during homecoming many years ago.
Goodding was remembered as a leader in the classroom, on the basketball court and football field. Loved ones described the police sergeant, husband, father and friend as someone people naturally gravitated towards.
“He worked hard to make things right,” Goodding’s former football coach and teacher John Hackworth said. “You would see him walking the halls and there was a sparkle, that’s what made him great.”
The Oregon Fallen Badge Foundation is collecting donations for the Goodding family.
A public memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Seaside Convention Center.
