GRESHAM, Ore. (KOIN 6) – A woman is in custody for allegedly robbing a bank less than a mile from Gresham police headquarters.

911 dispatchers received a call at 10:42 a.m. saying a woman handed a teller a note demanding money. The first officer arrived at the bank just one minute later and waited for the suspect to leave the building.

The suspect then walked out a door of the Bank of America in the 200 block of East Powell Boulevard and headed towards Southeast Roberts Avenue. That’s when police arrested her. She has been identified as 44-year-old Melissa Wheatt.

Detectives collected evidence at the scene, including video, from the bank as part of their investigation. The FBI has also been notified.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call the Gresham Police Department at 503.618.2719.
