SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Salem City Council has voted to permit anyone over the age of 21 to purchase recreational marijuana from existing medical marijuana dispensaries starting Oct. 1.

The Statesman Journal reports that the council’s vote Monday moves toward amending the existing ordinance to allow anyone over 21 to purchase marijuana, not just those with a state medical marijuana registration card.

The measure will advance to a second reading at the Sept. 28 council meeting.

Oregon passed Measure 91 in November. The law legalized the sale and use of recreational marijuana in the state. At the end of the legislative lesion, a law allowing medical dispensaries to conduct early sales of recreational marijuana tax-free was also passed.
