Woman, grandson rescued from Zollner Creek

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 46-year-old woman and her grandson were rescued from Zollner Creek Saturday afternoon after the car they were in hit a bridge abutment and went into the water.

It happened about 2:30 on Monitor McKee Road NE near Baron Road NE.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says Michelle Schroll and her 11-year-old grandson were able to escape the car, which was fully underwater, and cling to a tree until rescuers got to them.

Firefighters got them life preservers and were able to position a ladder in such a way they could reach Schroll and the boy.

Both Schroll and her grandson were taken to a hospital but are expected to survive their injuries.

It is unclear what caused Schroll’s car to leave the road.

Marion County Public Works is inspecting the bridge but the road remains open.

The car is still in the water.
