PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Inside the Union Gospel Mission, they’ve been cooking turkeys for a week, stripping the meat and freezing them. So far, they’ve cooked more than 80 turkeys yielding about 350 pounds of turkey meat.
It’ll all be covered with more than 60 gallons of gravy.

In 2015, the Union Gospel Mission did about 1200 meals, and expect more this year. But this year, they need pumpkin pies. They only have about 20 at the moment.
Stacy Kean with the Union Gospel Mission said they try to create a warm and friendly atmosphere for their guests, some of whom are homeless, others just without a place to go.
“We want to show people that they matter, that they’re important and they are worthy and deserving of a great Thanksgiving meal, just like any of us like to have on Thanksgiving day,” Kean told KOIN 6 News.
Generally they have plenty of pumpkin pies, but this year their resource fell through.
“Like anybody’s home on Thanksgiving, you want a nice slice of pie, so we try to get 100 to 120 pies,” Kean said. “We can have enough for people to enjoy a good sized slice and some whip cream on it.”
Store bought pies are fine, Kean said, but not frozen since it’s so close to Thanksgiving.
“We want to really bless people and show them that people do care for them and it’s just amazing that the Portland community donors and volunteers are making this happen,” Kean said.
The event — free to anyone in need — runs from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. this Thursday. The street around the mission — NW 3rd between Burnside and Couch — will be closed off so a 120-foot-long table can be put up underneath a tent.
