‘Doppler Effect’ could get Tualatin teen $250K

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Tualatin teen is in line for a quarter-million dollar grand prize as a semi-finalist in a global science contest.

Ashley Slater’s video explaining The Doppler effect for the Breakthrough Junior Challenge was chosen from more than 6000 entrants. The object is to creatively explain difficult science concepts and theories in a fun video.

The top 30 videos, chosen through 2 rounds of judging, are on Facebook. The one with the “highest total of likes, shares and positive reactions”
by November 9 gets an automatic berth into the finalists round on November 10.

The winner, who will get a $250,000 scholarship, will be announced in early December after judging by a panel of world-renowned scientists. The science teacher who inspired the student will get $50,000 and the winner’s school will get a $100,000 state-of-the-art science lab.
