PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Days after authorities alerted the public to a missing student from Portland State University, Washington County Sheriff’s detectives said Emily Hooper went missing on “her own volition.”

The 25-year-old PSU student “is an adult and has the right not to contact the police or her family until she chooses to. For these reasons we are suspending the investigation into her whereabouts at this time,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

Family members told Washington County Sheriff’s Office they thought Emily went to her boyfriend’s house after class, and they weren’t worried about her until he called them Friday night looking for her, deputies said.

Then Emily’s employer told them she didn’t show up to work on Friday, which is out of character for her.

Two of her sisters were on campus Monday helping to get the word out.

KOIN 6 News will have any updates to this story as necessary.
