PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man suspected of robbing a Southwest Portland hotel led police on a chase Tuesday and shot at officers before being shot himself.

Three children and a woman were in the van during the chase and shooting, Tigard Police Department spokesperson Jim Wolf said.

It began when the armed man held up the Aladdin Inn at SW 30th Avenue and Barbur Boulevard around 10:20 a.m., Wolf said. The man allegedly fired a shot while at the hotel, but no one was injured.

“We’re sitting in the chair and the guy just starts pointing the gun at us and basically says he’s going to shoot us if we don’t give him all the money right there,” hotel employee Jake Colin told KOIN 6 News.

Colin said the robber only got away with $70.

“That’s a lot of prison time for 70 bucks,” he commented.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspect run from the hotel and get into a white van.

“I heard a really loud bang and I looked over at the hotel… the guy came running over,” William Olofson said. “He was in all black, he had his face covered.”

Police started chasing the man down SW 72nd Avenue. He reportedly opened fire from the van as officers trailed him between Pacific Highway and Hwy 217, Wolf said.

The chase then continued onto I-5 and into Lake Oswego.

Eventually, the suspect stopped the van on SW Boones Ferry Road and Jean Way and took off on foot before being shot by police.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was taken to the hospital and is “being medically treated,” Wolf said.

The woman in the van was taken into custody for questioning after the pursuit. It’s unclear if the 3 children are hers or how they are connected to the man.

The Washington County Major Crime Team is leading the investigation at 5-7 crime scenes. The suspect’s car collided with other vehicles during the chase, Wolf said.
