PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A local woman told KOIN 6 News she was upset to learn she was among thousands of washing machine owners dealing with mold problems.
Angry consumers complained the machines didn’t do a good job getting rid of laundry residue, causing mold and mildew to grow underneath the rubber seal. Kathy Gant said her machine created a foul smell and ruined clothes.
“The house is musty down here, but this was really, really awful,” Gant said.
Enough people complained about the washers’ mold problems that settlements were reached in class action lawsuits against Kenmore, Whirpool and Maytag.
Machine owners can file a claim for a rebate or refund of $50 or 20% off a new machine. Customers can also get up to $500 back for mold repairs already done.
Despite the settlement, the companies in question still haven’t come forward to admit that any of the appliances made between 2001-2010 were faulty.
Gant said she’ll apply for a rebate “towards her inconvenience at this point” and that she’s disappointed so many other people are dealing with the same problem.
