VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) – A 19-year-old man is being held in San Bernardino, California after detectives linked him to a Clark County murder that happened in May.

David Johnathan Salgado jumped into the ocean to evade arrest, but was taken into custody July 16. He once lived in Vancouver, a police spokesperson said.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Fugitive Taskforce in Southern California found and arrested Salgado in Venice Beach, California.

The warrant was obtained July 12 by detectives with the Vancouver Police Department. It’s unknown why police waited nearly a week to release information about Salgado’s arrest.

The investigation began May 9 when the body of Fernando Cendejas-Pardo was discovered at an apartment in the 4500 block of Nicholson Road. But police did not say anything about the case until 2 days later.

Initially police said there was no threat to the public, but later they asked for the public’s help in finding his killer.

It’s not known when Salgado will be extradited to Washington.
