PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The MAX Improvement Project is underway.

On Sunday morning, crews began the project that will disrupt the MAX lines through May 21. TriMet officials said riders should expect extremely crowded MAX trains during the two weeks of construction. MAX lines will be disrupted and run less frequently. TriMet said to allow 30 to 45 minutes extra to get to where you are going.

MAX trains will not run on their current schedules during construction. Only the Blue Line will run on the westside between Hillsboro and the Library/Galleria stations. The Blue and Red Lines will run along 5th and 6th Avenues. The Green line will end at the Rose Quarter Transit Center and not run into downtown.

The detours are a big adjustment, but Chief Operating Officer Doug Kelsey says a lot of planning has gone into hitting the 13-day construction deadline.

“We have very good confidence,” Kelsey said. “We expect we will be out of there on the 21st.”
