CORBETT, Ore. (KOIN) – A 37-year-old mom died after falling nearly 60 feet with her toddler son as the two were hiking in the Columbia River Gorge.
The Multnomah County Medical Examiners confirms the death of Stephanie A. Cohen, of Portland.
The sheriff’s office says the woman was hiking on Sunday afternoon when the boy fell down an embankment. When Cohen tried to rescue him, she fell and died.
Officials say both Cohen and the boy had fallen approximately 60 feet off a cliff along the trail and traveled another 30 feet down a steep slope.
Paramedics attempted lifesaving efforts as the woman was brought up to the trail and transported down to the parking area. She was declared deceased at the trailhead, according to Multnomah County Capt. Steve Alexander.
The 3-year-old boy was transported by ambulance to the hospital with serious injuries.
