Peacock Lane neighbors worry about lot splitting

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Peacock Lane is known for its annual holiday lights display, but now residents fear development plans could ruin their unique neighborhood.

A house on the 500 block of SE Peacock Lane is in the process of being sold.

Everett Custom Homes owner Vic Remmers tells KOIN 6 News his company is interested in splitting the lot in 2 and purchasing the property right behind it.

But the plan isn’t sitting well with everyone.

“If one goes down, it’s over,” neighborhood activist Alyssa Isenstein Krueger said. “Once the houses start coming down, it’s not Peacock Lane anymore, it’s infill.”

Remmers says his development company has no plans to tear down the existing home, but neighbors worry it will set a precedent for new construction on the block.

“People are upset because it’s Peacock Lane. People remember walking down the street as children, then they bring their children. Then they bring their grandchildren,” Toni Anderson, who has lived on the street for 35 years, said. “It’s decades and generations… it’s important to a lot of people in some ways we may not understand.”

Everett Custom Homes will send an email to all Peacock Lane residents on Tuesday.

Remmers says he wants to hold a neighborhood meeting to talk about their concerns with the lot splitting plan and try to dispel any rumors that may be spreading.
