PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An apartment building was badly damaged Saturday morning in a 2 alarm fire.

The fire at the Westridge Meadows apartments on NW Chemeketa Lane was reported to dispatch at 9:45.

When crews from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue arrived on scene the 3-story building was fully involved.

Investigators say the fire started on a balcony of a first floor unit and quickly spread to the second and third floors.

It took firefighters 45 minutes to put out the fire, but they remained on scene for several hours putting out hot spots. They say a sprinkler system in the complex helped extinguish the flames.

All of the residents got out safely but 14 people, including 4 children, have been displaced and are being helped by the Red Cross.

Investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire started.
