PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — In previous years, the Portland area has dealt with either much too snow, or far too little. But this year, the region’s snowpack is close to what it should be and officials say that means things are looking up for summer.
“Currently, statewide, we are at 94%,” NRCS snow survey supervisor Scott Oviatt “Last year at this date we were at 15% so it’s a remarkable improvement.”
So how does that translate to the region’s water supply?
“We’re running generally about 75% average for our spring and summer water supply,” National Weather Service hydrologist Andy Bryant said. “It should be enough to reach our demands for northwest Oregon during those months.”
Overall, it’s a better situation going into summer. Last year, the Northwest dealt with extremely dry conditions which meant wildfires burned throughout the season.
“I think the key is that we’ve been able to reestablish our reservoir numbers after the above normal precipitation,” Oviatt explained.
