BANDON, Ore. (KOIN) — A derelict boat that may have originated from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan was spotted along the Oregon Coast.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew spotted a portion of the boat, which is 25-30 feet long, towards the southern end of the coast on March 16.

A tracking buoy attached to the boat indicates it is heading toward the coastline and may reach the beach between Bandon and Cape Arago sometime Tuesday.

Officials say there’s no sign of hazardous material on board.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Hatfield Marine Science Center will remove samples of plants and animals on the boat to check for invasive species.

Visitors are asked to respect the work zone as a local salvager secures it.
